5 Red Flags When Hiring a Social Media Manager

One of the many roles that a business owner can outsource is their social media management. I have team members who turn my videos into social media posts and blogs for me, and this allows me to focus on sales and client connections.

But when you are hiring a new social media manager, you have to keep an eye out for red flags! Here are some things to look out for in a new hire.

1. They Aren’t Using Your Voice

This is one of the most important things to look for when hiring someone who will be speaking for you. They need to be able to sound like you and represent your brand voice. They might take a little bit of practice, but if they are still unable to sound like you after you have provided examples and feedback, you may need to reassess their work for you.

Sounding like you, and not sounding too salesy or generic, is key to the success of your social media accounts!

2. They Don’t Have Initiative

You want someone who can come up with a plan and present it to you. I’d much rather hire someone who can think creatively and come up with a plan than hire someone who just follows the instructions I give them.

You are hiring someone so you have less work, not more.

3. They Need Management

In the same theme as the last point, you don’t want to hire someone who needs constant direction.

If they have trouble communicating with you and your team, or they ask constant questions about things that they could easily find out from other sources, than that is definitely too much work for you.

4. They Can’t Show You Past Successes

This can be in the form of references, case studies, or testimonials. You want someone who has some experience and is currently working with other clients. The existence of other clients shows that they are providing satisfactory work to other business owners (and they will do the same for you!).

5. They are Unethical

You probably want organic marketing. Hiring someone who turns around and buys likes for you is not going to end well. Your social media manager should be open and honest with you about their methods and strategies.

Don’t continue to hire someone who lies to you!
