Stuck in a Rut? Here are Some Idea Generation Strategies!

Sometimes inspiration comes like lightning. You wake up one morning and you are so full of creative energy that you are coming up with new content ideas left and right.

But you can’t just sit around waiting for lightning to strike. If you want to be consistent on social media, you need to be able to generate new ideas even when you don’t have a lot of creative energy.

Are you stuck in a rut with your content? Here are some idea generation strategies to bring life back to your online presence.

Using the Content Generator

Before you spend time writing out lists and staring at blank computer screens, you should probably know that I’ve made a tool for this exact problem!

The Content Generator can help you come up with 2,000 content ideas in as little as 10 minutes. (Seriously, TEN MINUTES).

All you have to do is spend some time typing out the main topics you want to talk about and lists of related words. Then the Content Generator creates a bank of 2,000 content ideas that you can use to create social media posts, blogs and articles, YouTube videos, podcast episodes, and more.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Drawing inspiration from others can be a great way to come up with new ideas. Sometimes a creative block can be solved by looking at something from a new perspective.

If you have hired a team, having a brainstorming session can be a great time to see what kind of creative ideas your team members might have. They might see your business from a different angle than you do and come up with interesting ideas and solutions as a result.

If you are a solopreneur, then you can have a coworking call with other entrepreneurs to share strategies and see what new ideas you can come up with afterward.

If you don’t want to talk to anyone (we all have those days), you can watch some YouTube videos or read a few blog posts to see if you can find any inspiration.

Google is Your Friend

Pick a word. Any word.

Okay, not any word. Pick a word that is connected to your business.

I work with social media. So I might pick “Instagram.” I can just type that into Google and see what search suggestions there are. Or I can type “How does Instagram” or “Why does Instagram” or “Instagram marketing.”

Play around with Google and let the drop-down suggestions give you ideas for new content.

What are people searching for? How can you answer your followers’ questions without them even having to ask? Creating content based on what people are searching for is a great way to establish yourself as a thought leader and provide value for your followers.

Visual Idea Generation Strategies

Stream of consciousness, Venn diagrams, word banks, word association games — sometimes playing around can help you to come up with new content ideas.

Grab a journal or your laptop, go to a new location (this can be a cafe in Paris or a bench in your backyard), and play around with words and images to spark your imagination.

If you are a visual person, try using different colored pens to organize your ideas, or draw pictures or create a vision board to find inspiration.

Get Inspired By Your Old Content

Sometimes you don’t have to generate new ideas… you can use your old ones!

Content repurposing allows you to use long-form content you’ve already created to fill your social media channels with interesting and engaging content.

Your old podcast episodes, blog posts, and YouTube videos can all be repurposed as micro-content. This can save you time and creative energy!

You can find highlights from your past content and turn them into quote cards, captions, audiograms, and video clips. All of these kinds of micro-content can help share the best parts of your content with your followers!

How Do You Generate New Ideas?

Whether you use the Content Generator or make a color-coded mind-map, everyone has a different way of coming up with new content ideas for their businesses.

Every entrepreneur is different, and so are their idea generation strategies.
